Description :The Pioneer A-400 is a highly reviewed amplifier that is well known for value for money. High quality at a budget price. The A-400 is a no frills 'audiophile' amplifier that create a storm when it is launched. Hi-Fi magazines greet it with a chorus of praise. It has won the coveted Product of the Year by the What Hi-Fi magazine - an accolade that had never before gone to a Japanese company. Many comparisons with other amplifiers costing many times more than the Pioneer A-400 are made which confirm the A-400 to be a 'giant killer'. Introduced in 1990, 25,000 units were sold in the first 18 months, securing an extraordinary 12.8% of the total amplifier market. Soon, the Pioneer A-400 attained something of a cult status. The A-400X model was introduced later but the demand was still for the original A-400 and the production continued till 1996. The Pioneer A-400 has a punchy, dynamic and detailed sound. Power is something the Pioneer A-400 is not short of and it can drive giant 5 foot floorstanders with ease. The only downside with the A-400 is a relatively poor phonostage and a tendency to sound a little harsh but it is very difficult to criticise it for the money. The Pioneer A-400 is subsequently superceded by the inferior A-400X ensuring it becomes something of a cult machine, something that will keep its value high even on the second hand market.
